Survey on the current status of Frankfurt Film Festivals

Film festivals enrich the cultural activities of the City of Frankfurt. They represent the international film scene and create access to films which are not featured in regular cinema programmes. They are an important platform for public discussion and entice filmmakers, professional visitors, and film enthusiasts to come to Frankfurt. Since the mid-1990s, the number of film festivals in the city and their popularity with the public have been steadily growing.

For the first time, the Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt has now published a detailed evaluation of the work of Frankfurt Film Festivals as part of its cultural development planning. This evaluation is based on interviews with members of the film sector and the evaluation of a comprehensive catalogue of 115 questions on the design, organisation and implementation of film festivals.

While presenting the achievements of film festivals for the cultural life of the city, this study on film festivals also highlights current challenges and needs associated with the growth and continuous professionalisation of festival work in recent years. The evaluation is part of the ongoing cultural development planning of the City of Frankfurt and forms the basis for the participation phase that is now beginning.

The “Results of the Survey on the Status of Frankfurt Film Festivals” were designed, conducted, and evaluated by Svetlana Svyatskaya, Film, Visual Media and Digitalisation Advisor at the Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt am Main.
